Arlesey (A) 0 - 3 Baldock Knights

This week’s game was at home to Baldock Knights. Following last weeks improvements everyone’s expectations were high. The first half lived up to that expectation. Arlesey pushed the visitors hard. Quick to challenge everything and a new belief in their abilities helped them contain the visitors for long periods of the first half. The game was played at a high tempo with both sides working hard. Long gone are the days where we started slowly. Against the run of play Baldock scored the only clear chance of the game. The game was so entertaining the halftime whistle came around so quickly. Half time score 0 –1.

Second half proved just as good. Again the home side tackled hard and pushed play into the visitors half for much of the game. Our midfield picked up the ball and ran at the visitors defence. Whilst our defence tidied up at the back. Up front was still a difficult area for us but with corners being won and bodies in the box, we won’t have too long to wait for those illusive goals. Three times the visitors broke through our defences and on two of these occasions they scored. It would have been three in this half had it not been for a fantastic save by Daniel in goal. It was a hard lesson in how to score for our youngsters. For most of the game they found themselves in possession but unable to finish. Many thanks to Baldock for an entertaining game. Well done both teams.Final score 0 – 3.

Arlesey (B) 0 -2  Baldock Knights

The second game was played at the same high tempo. A fine start from our lads again. Play switched from end to end in an excellent first half. The only difference between the two sides was a belter of a goal scored by Baldock from a corner kick. This fine strike came out of the blue in a game where we had the majority of possession and looked the more likely to create an opening. Half time score 0 – 1.

Second half provided more of the same. Despite pushing play into the visitors half we could not find the target. A change in our back line saw two players take up positions they had not played before and whilst getting used to their new roles they were caught flat footed allowing the visitors a chance on goal, one they didn’t miss. This was the only time they troubled us and the pair at the back were outstanding for the rest of the game. We had chances to get back into the match but the magic goal just didn’t materialise. The new found belief in our youngster will reap the rewards soon. Their positive attitude and never say die spirit is building week upon week. Now that they play as a team and not as individuals the only way forward is a winning one. Well done both teams and good luck Baldock for the rest of the season.Final score 0 – 2.

Buntingford Cougers 4 - 0 Arlesey (A)

This week Arlesey were away to Buntingford Cougars. The first half took a while to get going for our boys. Slow to the ball and half challenges gave the advantage to the home side. They camped just outside the penalty area and kept possession well. We did not get the ball out of our own half at all. The home side punished us and scored three goals.

Second half proved a little more successful. We saw more of the ball and started to relieve the pressure from our defence. A little belief started to creep into the team and although we did not create a scoring chance, we did limit the damage to only one further goal. Final score 4 – 0

Buntingford Cougers 4 - 0 Arlesey (A)

Despite the second game being between the same two teams with roughly the same players you would not have believed the difference. Arlesey closed down the attackers and played the ball up the field, something they did not do in the first game. The more they worked hard the more they started to enjoy what they were doing. The home side went in front with a well-taken goal but this time heads did not drop. Half time saw the home side only one up.

Second half provided the best period of play all season. Not only were we making the challenges, we were also running at the home side’s midfield. The magic words “pass the ball” were sinking in and now it was Arlesey that were attacking the defence. With their confidence growing Arlesey found themselves in front of goal but struggled to hit the target. It was a shame the lads did not get the rewards their positive play deserved. Before the final whistle was blown it was the home side that found the net. A good goal to finish a good match. Well done Buntingford and very well done Arlesey. If the youngsters can take this fantastic performance a little further it will be no time at all before they find winning form. Final score 2 - 0

15/10/05

Sawbridgeworth Juniors 5-0 Arlesey (A)

This week we took the long trip to Sawbridgeworth. The season had not been very fruitful so far and everyone was hoping for a win. The first half saw Arlesey permanently camped in their own half. Despite the relentless pressure the home side were putting the lads under they were not allowed to walk all over us thanks to some fine defending. At the half time whistle the home side were only one goal up. Half time score: 1 – 0.

Second half did not start well. We were second to the ball every time and when we did get possession we did not look for a pass, instead we were content to put the ball into touch. This only handed the ball back to the home side who again were camped in our half. With our goal under pressure it was inevitable that the home side would score again. Four goals were scored in quick succession. Despite the score line there were a few plus points to come out of the game. Heads did not drop and Michael and Charlie were exceptional. Well done Sawbridgeworth. Final score: 5 - 0.

15/10/05

Sawbridgeworth Juniors 6-0 Arlesey (B)

The second game proved even harder. Again the home side got off to a flying start. With our small squad all the boys would have to lift themselves up and try even harder. Daniel Mountney replaced David in goal. This is Daniels first season and he has proved to be a very promising keeper. The home side proved very strong and their passing game was good. We were still struggling to keep possession and push the game into their half. It wasn’t long before the home side opened the scoring. Despite the hard work put in we found ourselves two goals down at half time. Half time score: 2 – 0.

Second half continued in the same vein. Legs were tiring and confidence at a low. Without going into too much detail we conceded four more goals before the whistle. To be fair they were very good goals and even if we were on form they would have struggled to prevent them. So, a disappointing trip for the youngsters but the lads ran their socks off which will increase their stamina. Promising play from the new lads and I am sure better times are just around the corner. Well done both teams. Final score: 6 - 0.

WymondleyPark 4-0 Arlesey (A)

Arlesey were away to WymondleyPark today. After a good training session midweek spirit were high. All the lads started brightly unlike last week! Wymondley were a well-disciplined side, their passing game was quick and precise. Arlesey closed down the home side well, not giving them the space to pass the ball. Karl and Ben at the back were the busiest players along with David in goal pulling off some terrific saves. Midfield have looked a little short of fitness since the start of the season and with the work rate needed to contain Wymondley it wasn’t too long before they breached our defence. A well taken shot beat the keeper to put the home side in front at the break                            Half time score: 1 – 0.

Second half saw Arlesey continue to have to defend well. It was not going to be easy for Arlesey’s attackers to get much service but they stayed their positions and did manage to run at the home side’s defence on one or two occasions. Wymondley scored again with a ball that took a nasty bounce just in front of the keeper and rose up to beat him on his line.  The pattern of the game remained unchanged. Arlesey defended hard, but couldn’t get the ball up front to cause too many problems for the home side. Twice more Arlesey conceded which leaves a scoreline that does not reflect the effort that Arlesey put into this game. A much better performance from the youngsters. Well done both teams for an entertaining game.                                                                                                                                    Final score: 4 - 0.

24/9/05

WymondleyPark 6-0 Arlesey (B)

Our secondgame of the day was a bit of an experiment. Many of the team played different positions from what they have been used to. Again there was plenty of effort but little passing. The lads struggled to maintain any kind of shape and soon had to pick the ball out of their own net. Despite some heroic defending Arlesey could not clear their lines and suffered at the hands of the Wymondley striker. Three more goals were scored by the home side before half time, the third of which was a very well taken shot.  Half time score: 4 – 0.

The second half saw Daniel Mountney make his debut in goal for Arlesey and allowed David Legate who normally wears the keeper’s gloves to play in midfield. Both had a very good game. Tired legs were evident as the game went on but Arlesey did not give up. We did concede two more goals this half but do not think Arlesey didn’t work valiantly. Trying players in different positions to what they are used to did not work. The next game will see a return to normality and hopefully our first win. Well done both teams. Final score: 6 - 0.

Arlesey (A) 0 - 4 Bishop Stortford Rangers

Arlesey welcomed Bishop Stortford Rangers and Rovers to kick-off the start of the new season. With some new faces in our ranks we were looking for a good start, but it was the visitors who had the better opening game. Our lads were caught out by the quality of the visitors passing. We found ourselves under siege in our own half, unable to get the ball out of the danger zone. Each time we cleared the ball they came back at us, splitting our defence with their passing. They were three good goals to the good by the time the first half whistle was blown. It could have been worse!!

Half time score: 0 – 3.

Second half saw Arlesey improve their game. We started to close them down quicker and our man marking stopped the ease at which they had attacked our goal in the first half. All four of our new recruits featured in this half and all did well. Charlie and Daniel were in midfield with Michael in defence and Jack up front. The visitors still proved to be the strongest side and finished off their victory with one more goal before the final whistle. It is early days so the lads mustn’t feel too bad about the result. Plenty of good things came out of the game. Ben, Karl and Michael all did well overall. Dean and Jack up front saw little of the ball. Jordan, Daniel Dietzman and Daniel Mountney and Charlie all ran their socks off in the midfield. David in goal will feel disappointed to have picked the ball out of the net so many times but this was down to the excellent finishing of the visitors front men and in no way should he feel bad about it. Well done Bishop Stortford. Final score: 0 - 4.

10/9/05

Arlesey (B) 1 - 2 Bishop Stortford Rangers

Our second game of the day saw Arlesey play Bishop Stortford Rovers. An opportunity to put the first game behind them. This time things were a little more even. Tighter marking in the middle and a better service for the striker allowed Arlesey to take the game to the visitors. Dean up front had a couple of openings to bother their goal but failed to make them count.  Despite more of the ball than the first game, it was the visitors that once again opened the scoring with a well-taken goal.  Half time score: 0 – 1.

The second half again provided good entertainment. Arlesey’s defence battled hard to keep the visitors out. It was a long defensive clearance from Michael at the back that allowed Jack to turn and run at the visitors goal, beating their defence and drilling the ball low and hard past their keeper to level the score.  Bishop Stortford did not allow the home side to capitalise on the goal and were soon battling hard to find a winner. David in goal again had plenty to do. On one such attack the visitors broke through our defence and despite coming off his line quickly to narrow the angle he was unable to stop the ball finding the back of the net. With legs tiring and time running out Arlesey were unable to find a reply before the final whistle was blown. On the whole it had been a spirited effort from the home side who can take heart from some good passages of play and an excellent first goal of the season. Everyone gave 100%, which is all we can ask of them. Well done to both teams and good luck to the visitors for the season ahead. Final score: 1 - 2.
