Arlesey Town 2-3 B S Northolt

After what has turned out to be a long hard but enjoyable season, we reached our last game at home to visitors Northolt, although their was nothing at stake for the blues (Northolt needed a win to come runners-up), this game would prove just how much the team had improved over the latter part of the season (Northolt inflicting our only real drubbing this season)

Although the ‘rec’ pitch had taken two nights of heavy rain it was still very hard and wouldn’t take a stud, but morale was upbeat after Wednesday’s presentation evening all the lads were in high spirits and looking forward to this game.

It was fitting that the ‘loyal’ 13 lads who had seen out the second half of the season were all available, and Dunc and I could use the preferred ‘4,4,2’ system (Matt had to ref the game).

This game started like a ‘Rocky film’ both teams slogging it out but not able to produce a knock out (goal) chances although not clear cut went begging at each end and just as it appeared to be heading for stale-mate leading up to half time.  The visitors struck the first blow a lively Northolt Striker cut inside the blues fullback and shot firmly to keeper Phil Woolgers left low and into the net.  Unable to respond before half time Dunc and I were not too despondent as the lads had showed in patches all was not lost, Lee Horwood (nice touches) Adam Coles and Matt Baust (graft and gile) and Tom Cookman, Joe Follano and Nick Webb with pace surely our luck would change in the second half! Getting Andy Goddard more of the ball was a priority.  Sure enough seconds after the kick off he (Andy) roasted the full back and centered invitingly for someone to score, but after eluding the keeper and defenders Joe Follano could only snatch his shot over the bar.

Just when it seemed certain the blues were going to get back in the match they took a real body-blow, another Norhtholt forward tried his luck with a snap-shot inside the blues box, taking a wicked deflection off a defender the ball passed the helpless keeper and crept just inside the post. Worse was to follow as a sweetly struck shot from just outside the area gave keeper Phil Woolgar no chance.

This only sparked the blues into life Nick Webb going close forcing the keeper into a right footed save close to the goal line and Joe Follano excruciatingly close to collecting numerous through balls in on the keeper.

Whether it was due to Norhtholt thinking they were home and dry or the blues midfield rolling up there sleeves and making a fight of it, Arlesey produced some of their best football of the match, from full backs to forwards neat ‘one-touch’ football with every player making themselves available turned the balance the blues way. Their efforts were rewarded when Nick Webb cutting in from the left wing fired home an unstoppable shot high to the keepers left and into the net. And it was Nick who showed his unselfish side with words of “he’s only got a right foot” (from a away supporter) as encouragement he produced a lung busting run down the left flank cut back a cross (with his left) into the path of a stretching Tom Cookman and he duly scorched his shot into the roof of the net .

A nervous Norhtholt endured a last ten mins of nail biting as the blues pressed for a equalizer, with headed chances from Capt Buckers and Luke Jenkins missed, and Joe Follano doing everything but score this was yet another game they had been beaten by the odd goal.

Unfortunately the lads gave themselves a bit too much to do, but showed with effort and there entertaining brand of football they can compete with the teams at the top.

Duplicating what was said on Wednesday night I would just like to thank all the lads and parents for there help this season, although not winning any trophies we have won much admiration for the way we have played. Thanks also to Ray Woolgar and Matt Jenkins our (ref’s) and Kerrie and Carl for their help with fixture details and our first class website. Also a big thank you to my long suffering wife who with out her help the team wouldn’t be here.

Arlesey  5-1 B S Jets

This was another game where the blues were looking to show the visitors the away loss to them was ‘just one of those games’, but being down to the bare eleven it was going to be tough.

Both teams responded to the near perfect conditions right from the start, with chances going begging at either end, but frantic football produced frantic finishing with many Arlesey attempts ending up in the adjoining field. But on 13 minutes a sprightly Nick Webb (this week without full English breakfast) evaded 2 tackles on the edge of the jets box, and fired goal-wards a low drive, which conveniently took a wicked bounce over the keepers diving hands into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

This was a very open game with both teams trying to attack at every opportunity, then around the 20 minute mark as Matt Baust and Adam Coles getting a firm grip in midfield and in turn Lee Horwood (a rare full 90 minutes) was using clever touches and passes to split open the jets defense. Just as the game was tilting the Blues way on 34 minutes (what seemed to be a harmless cross into the jets box) a cunning Nick Webb sneaked inside a napping jets defender and steered a shot past the advancing keeper. Going for the kill the Blues forced numerous corners and a handful of chances were missed, one attempt off Tom Cookmans (ear!!!) from a cross, narrowly missing the far post led us into half-time.

With no fresh legs to bring on, MDM emphasized letting ‘the ball do the work’ and get Andy Goddard more into the game.

On this advice and with Matt Baust and Adam Coles carrying on the same tempo as in the first, this in turn enhanced Arlesey’s authority on the game and started a constant wave of passing moves forward, one of which started with Lee Horwood linking with Andy Goddard down the left flank stretched the jets defense and Andy’s cut back into the middle was struck fiercely goal-wards by Tom Cookman and could only be palmed into the net by the keeper.

By now the blues were rampant Andy Goddard, Adam Coles and Lee Horwood all going close to scoring, but just as it seemed to be ‘plain sailing’ jets speedy striker help snatch a goal, chasing a pumped forward long ball and his colleague smartly slotted home from just inside the area. Shortly after the jets goal, Matt Baust went on yet another of his mazy runs, waltzing into the jets penalty box and after beating four bemused defenders his left footed strike found its way into the bottom corner (no more than he deserved).

Then to finish off a fine team performance a succession of neat passing from Lee Horwood, Tom Cookman created a chance for Nick Webb, who bursting in on the keeper, fired home and completed his well deserved hat-trick.

This was a superb ‘all-round performance’ from the lads and most of this football was a joy to watch, although it was an end of season game (with nothing at stake) enthusiasm and commitment was in abundance, a special mention for the hard-working defense including keeper Phil Woolgar and the back four of Tom Quambro, Luke Jenkins, Carl Greenhow and ‘Rimmer’ who as well as strong in the tackle started some of the sexy football moves and the only blot was the single goal.

One game left lads next Sunday lets hope we can finish on a high.

Arlesey 3-2 Risden Wood

This was the long awaited return match on home soil of Harlow based Risden Wood, and for many reasons (those who witnessed the first game) there were just a few scores to settle.  With almost perfect conditions, the sun shining, the only low was the late withdrawal of Captain Luke Buck and just 12 to choose from. There was no need to hype the lads up as they knew what they needed to do inside the rules of the game to get the three points.

Both sides started a little scrappy and the blues found it difficult to get into their passing rhythm, Risden opting mainly for the long ball approach.  After some end to end sparing a misunderstanding in the blues defence let in a Risden forward to snatch a soft goal, almost immediately Andy Goddard had a golden opportunity to level Tom Cookman raced down the right wing and crossed low into the middle the ball evading everyone in the box but he spooned it over the bar from two yard’s out (it looked as though it bobbled Andy).  Shortly afterwards the ever eager Matt Baust tried his luck but it fizzed over, just as it seemed it was going to be ‘one of those games’ when nothing was going our way. Just on the stroke of half time up stepped Joe Follano (who from 25 yards out at least) hit a crisp half volley (Roberto Di Matteo v Middlesboro cup final) that thundered down off the underside of the cross bar and into the net, one we will never forget.

Half time MDM couldn’t fault the way the lads were trying to play the game and encouraged more wing play from wide men Andy Goddard and Nick Webb.  The blues started the more briskly knocking the ball around with more fluency, Nick Webb taking on the full back with trickery and pace, but as in the first, uncharacteristic sloppy defensive play let in an alert Risden forward, who gratefully accepted the chance to score. More worrying was the health of Luke Jenkins after an asthma attack he was forced to leave the field which was a big blow as he had kept the pacey Risden front man in his back pocket for most of the first half.  A hasty reshuffle was needed sub Lee Horwood went on into mid field and (a reluctant) Matt Baust dropped into the back four; this enforced move turned the blues fortunes on its head.  As moments later, after some more Nick Webb wing wizardry down the right and squaring the ball in the box to Tom Cookman, he turned and fired home giving the keeper no chance.

New confidence flooded back into the whole team everyone wanted to get involved and press for a winner, although well aware of Risden’s  pacey counter attack.

With a string of chances missed and ‘goal mouth pinball’ not producing anything, Risden looked likely to get a point, but Matt Baust produced a pin point cross field ball onto the head of Tom Cookman who glanced a header into the path of Nick Webb who brushed aside a defender on his way into the area and finished powerfully past the keeper and complete a well deserved comeback.

The lead could have further been extended if Lee Horwood's (control with right and strike with left) half volley from the edge of the box had been six inches lower as the keeper looked well beaten, still we can’t be greedy and accepted the three points.

This turned out to be an exciting end of season game much credit should be given to both sides for their effort, skill and never give up attitude until the final whistle.

All the lads put in splendid performances helping to turn the game Arlesey's way, notably Adam Coles tireless in mid field and ‘the rock’ Matt Baust (M.O.T.M) switching to an unaccustomed role in defence.  Well done lads two games left!

Shefford Saints 5-3 Arlesey

Yet another away fixture this time local rivals ss, this was bound to be a hotly contested match (as many of the lads had been warned an 8-0 thrashing was on the cards!).  Unlike previous weeks MDM had a squad of 13 to choose from and adopted a preferred a 4,4,2 system.

Right from the star the blues got stuck in with Adam Coles and Matt Baust stamping their authority in mid field the lads were really up for it.

On 31 mins after a crunching Tom Quambro tackle and first time passing between Nick Webb and Tom Cookman the ball was threaded to Joe Follano who finished smartly past the advancing keeper.  Then 6 mins later a blistering Tom Cookman run down the right wing and producing a lovely center for Joe Follano (timing his run to perfection) to finish firmly from 8 yards out (his 9th goal of the season).

The Saints were like a wounded lion and roared back peppering the Arlesey goal (mainly with long range shooting) but the back four were not going to give the lead away lightly, and keeper Phil Woolgar in superb form, (pulling off numerous first class saves) one in particular tipping over the bar a shot while arching backwards!  Unfortunately more chances went begging for the blues most notably a glancing header from a quickly taken corner, Tom Cookman just missing the far post.  In hindsight we could have done without half time although under pressure from the counter attack the lads were still creating chances of their own and should really have built on their lead.  What could we say at half time!!!!! The lads had put in so much effort and had played so well to go 2 goals up away from home, just more of the same and keep it tight at the back.

Just as in the first, early chances went the blues way Joe Follano (inches away on two occasions) form converting crosses after excellent work from Tom Cookman and Nick Webb.  But against the run of play and in quick succession Saints drew level and forged into the lead, undeterred the blues replied, Andy Goddard scorching a tasty volley into the net from a corner, at the far post.  Then rather cruelly went fatigue seemed to take its toll (playing up the slope) Saints plundered two late goals to take the points this was like a kick in the teeth to the lads and our hearts went out to them they were more than worthy of a draw this was not a two nil thrashing!!!!!

They should also take pride in the way they played and contributed to a cracking game.

Wymondley  2-1 Arlesey

UNBEATEN RUN ENDED AFTER FIVE GAMES

The lads unbeaten run ended with an unlucky defeat away to Wymondley.  After a good start to the first half and a lions share of the possession on ten minutes Cookers forced a good save from their keeper.  Another good chance after 13mins saw the energetic Jo head over from six yards.  Then on 14mins Rimmer made an excellent block to stop us going one down.  After 31mins and yet another penetrating run down the right wing Andy Goddard had a cross/shot that rebounded of the bar only for the hapless Wymondley defender to knock into his own net, 1-0 to us.  Despite attempts of bribery at half time, sorry Andy we cannot credit you with this one. On 36 mins after a corner was headed back across our goal and not claimed by our keeper Wymondley headed themselves level.  All square at half time.

The second half started briskly and after only 1min after Jo charged down a clearance and Nick Webb running off yet another full English breakfast volleyed only inches wide.  Rimmer again made and good tackle to prevent us going behind.  The mid field battle was still being won by Adam, Tom and Nick. Then disaster, on 30 mins after a John Terry like tackle in the box by Luke Jenkins, who by then was Captain, (as Buckers had to be replaced as he had a headache after taking a full swinging foot right in the choppers late in the first half ) and with no others defenders in close proximity the ball fell to the other unmarked Wymondley striker who with a precision finish made it 2-1.  Captain Luke then made another superb John Terry block (should have been a penalty to them as he only touched the ball after sweeping away both of the strikers legs) we had a few counter attacks that on another day would have resulted in us levelling.

With us on the attach the referee blew for full-time with according to our stop watches over a minute of normal time left plus stoppage time.  The ref didn’t have stop watch!

Unlucky lads, but well done.  Have a nice Easter and do not eat to many Easter eggs (or full English’s Mr Webb).  No training this week as there is no game on Easter Sunday.

Sawbridegworth 1-2 Arlesey

After training on Wednesday M.D.M knew they would again be missing keeper Phil Woolgar and also midfielders Matt Baust and Andy Goddard, frantic phone calls could only muster ten fit players, it was a very long and apprehensive journey over to Sawbridgeworth , for an 11:00 kick off.

Although against all M.D.M’s football principals, a strict defence line up was adopted with many players out of their normal position.

Starting up the slope and against a pretty brisk wind the blues, stuck to the task well, with  Luke Jenkins sweeping behind a solid back four a midfield of three and Tom Cookman as the lone striker. All the lads adhered to the game plan and with bags of encouragement from our loyal supporters, confidence grew minute by minute, could we get something from this game?  But on 20 minutes a speculative shot by ‘sawbo’ from just outside the area caught keeper Joe Follano off guard and at full stretch couldn’t prevent the ball crossing the line. Undeterred the lads showed great character, striking back almost immediately, after some terrific one touch football through center midfield between Adam Coles and Tom Cookman,  Nick Webb burst into the area between two defenders, and with a deft lob over the advancing falling ‘sawbo’ keeper, the ball nestled nicely into the net to put us back on level terms.

With Adam Coles and Tom Quambro working tirelessly in the middle, Rimmer solid at right-back and Lee Horwood restricting the dangerous ‘sawbo’ right winger and Joe Follano pulling off two brave saves, frustration seemed to spread throughout the home team, although the half-time whistle was very welcome for the lads and MDM.

After taking some well earned water on board the lads were reminded by MDM that only 100% team effort will get them anything out of the game.

After the whistle Arlesey started off where they left off and built on the pluses from a superb first half with ‘solid as a rock’ tackling from Carl Greenhow, captain Buckers and Luke Jenkins and Tom Cookman linking up with Nick Webb the blues used the slope and the wind to their advantage causing the ‘sawbo’ defence to retreat.

Dunc, Matt and I exchanged mutterings of “we can do this, we can get all three points” and sure enough after many forced corners one fell at the feet of Nick Webb who sold the keeper a dummy, by shaping to volley home but after not the desired contact the ball found its way into the net (it doesn’t matter how it goes in it went in!) to the sound of ecstatic management and supporters. More stubborn defending and words of encouragement from MDM got the lads through to a very memorable and well earned victory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(That’s four games undefeated and three doubles of home and away victories)

J Follano, M Rimmer, L Jenkins, L Buck, C Greenhow, T Quambro, L Horwood, A Coles, N Webb, T Cookman.

This victory makes it all worthwhile and on behalf of the management team I would just like to thank all 10 players who truly gave 120% and this should give the lads even more confidence for the next few games.  COME ON LADS YOU CAN DO IT! (There are 15 more points to be had)

Hope to see you all at training on Wednesday.

Cheers Malc

Bassingbourn 2-2 Arlesey

After two wins on the bounce it was a tricky away fixture at Bassingbourn, having lost the two previous meetings (cup and league) by the odd goal MDM believed a change in fortune was due.

Once again the odds were stacked against the lads, Phil Woolgar ringing in injured, so dragged from his sick bed Joe Follano was asked to deputize in goal and the unlucky Karl Greenhow still not available due to a fractured wrist and traveling with no subs prospects were not good.

But as always the true spirit built up in the team seems to come out when it’s most needed and right from the start on a bone hard surface with a chilly blustery wind sweeping across the field the blues set out their stall.

The first half hour was pretty uneventful with both teams not really threatening but Bassingbourn with a huge slice of good fortune took the lead, undeterred this early setback only installed more urgency into the blues play and Tom Cookman’s thunderous volley against the bar was so close to putting us level at half time.

At the turn around captain Buckers donned the gloves, Joe Follano moved upfront and Tom Quambro moved alongside Luke Jenkins this switch produced instant success with Joe Follano bursting through the Bass defence into the area before calmly slotting home past the advancing keeper. Confidence spread through the team and supporters immediately and the blues started to knock the ball around in style. With Nick Webb coming more into the game (running the Bass left back ragged) after resorting to hauling him down just outside the area Nick took the free kick himself floating over an inviting cross, Cookers timing his run to perfection, guided a downward header inside the post giving the keeper no chance.

Just ‘unlucky’ can only describe what was to happen next an Adam Coles scorching half volley seemed certain to burst the net but somehow the Bass keeper tipped it over the bar and on the edge of the area Nick Webb crashed a powerful drive against the bar. Also after an in-swinging Nick Webb corner unfortunately Sky Sports technology was not available to prove the ball had clearly crossed the line. More pressure from Matt Baust long throws and numerous corners were fruitless and would prove to be costly with Bass scrambling a scruffy goal near the end and hang on for the draw.

On the whole we must be happy with a share of the points, but on our second half showing and chances created a little disappointed not to get all three, every player that pulled on the blue shirt (and green) should be proud of themselves today they showed tremendous commitment and are proving to be an attractive side to watch.

Cheers Malc

P.S thank you again for all our ‘first class’ supporters.

Arlesey 4-2  Baldock Town  Crusaders

While our Chelsea supporting manager Malcolm was travelling around Europe and Barcelona of all places (unlike his beloved Chelsea will do again this season) Town knocked up back-to-back wins with another sound performance.

Watched by the plastered Carl Greenhow (and not alcohol induced!) a sound defensive performance, not helped by a Russian linesman not seeing a ball that was two foot out of play for Baldock’s first goal and a lucky rebound for their second goal, was complemented by an excellent performance from the central midfielders, winning almost every 50/50 ball and spraying passes down both wings.

After an excellent save from our keeper in the second minute Town went into a three nil lead with strikes from Andy Goddard (4 mins), Matty Baust (16 mins) and Tom Cookman (31mins).

Early in the second half Baldock pulled a goal back but two minutes latter Captain Buckers after several swipes at the ball got his second goal in as many games (his fifth goal of the season - watch out Cookers) before in the last few minutes clearing the ball onto the Baldock strikers foot for it to rebound over a stranded Phil into the net.

Letchworth Orange 0-8 Arlesey

All aula!! No more wingeing! Just a wonderful win!!.

Although the lads were looking forward to pitting there skills against a team (lower than them in the league for a change!!) they didn’t need reminding of the (bish-stort-jets) ‘banana skin’ in previous weeks and not to be to over confident in claming the much needed 3 points.

With a chilly wind in their faces and on a badly cut up pitch the blues went for it straight from the start, Matt Baust and Adam Coles getting a firm grip in mid field creating many openings with clever first time passes, Tom Cookman and Joe Follano ever eager to use their pace up front.

It was great to see every blues player wanting to get involved in the build up to some entertaining approach play, the only missing ingredient was a goal. Credit must be given to Letchworth who held out until the twentieth minute when (three London buses turned up!) within the space of one and a half mins reward for the blues superiority, three superbly worked and taken goals.  Goal one Tom Cookman turning in the box and lashing home from a Carl Greenhow long throw, goal two Nick Webb showing a great turn of pace burst into the area from a left flank and fired home, then the ‘crème de la crème’ after another surging run from Matt Baust the ball was swept wide to Andy Goddard and after roasting the Letch full back, his firmly struck cross was calmly struck home by live wire Joe Follano goal three.

For the first time this season it was great to have a three goal cushion leading up to half time, last ditch blocking and the diminutive but in form Letch keeper preventing the blues adding to their three goals burst.

The game was played at such a frantic pace and half time was upon us in no time, (for the first time) MDM were lost for words, the only target left was to score more goals and keep a clean sheet.  This they duly did Andy Goddard rifled home a loose ball inside the box, Tom Cookman an exquisite lob over the keeper, Joe Follano slotting home from a Nick Webb cross, captain Buckers volleying home into the roof of the net, and goal number eight yes eight! Nick Webb finishing from a tight angle after good work from Tom Cookman.

Please accept my apologies if the goals are not in the correct order as I had to run the line in the second half.  Rimmer and Lee Horwood were introduced for Andy Goddard and Tom Quambro (this by no means reflected their performances) to prevent them from being permanent ice sculptures on the line and reinforced MDM’s policy that everyone should get a game.

More chances went begging right up to the final whistle, but MDM were more than pleased with the ‘all round’ team performance it was great to see everyone going home with a smile on their faces.

P Woolgar, C Greenhow, L Jenkins, L Buck, T Quambro, N Webb, M Baust, A Coles, A Goddard, J Follano, T Cookman subs both used L Horwood, M Rimmer

PS it was disappointing to hear the news that Carl Greenhow had fractured his wrist during this game, and we all would like to wish him a speedy recovery.

Hope to see you all Wednesday (training).

Arlesey 1-2 Hitchin Town

After last weeks debacle MDM were a tad nervous as to how the lads would react to the clash with top of the league visitors Hitchin, could they show bounce-back ability???

Boosted by the return of striker Tom Cookman and an almost full strength squad (apart from late withdrawal Sam Bartram) to chose from, MDM still showed plenty of optimism and tried to install this into the players during the pre-match warm up.

The lads must have taken this onboard and got stuck in right from the start showing Hitchin no respect at all, winning many of the 50-50 balls in midfield and starting strongly at the back, took Hitchin by surprise (they obviously had ideas of a walkover). Both sides set-off at a cracking pace (could have been due to the icy cold wind sweeping over the pitch) just as the blues got into their stride bad luck hit them again, Lee Horwood falling awkwardly after a heavy challenge in the midfield was unable to recover and was replaced by Joe Follano, but credit to the lads this didn’t disrupt the balance of the team and they continued with their passing game.

This was a closely contested match, no reflection to league positions both teams tried to play football in the blustery wind with chances going begging at either end and the visitors becoming increasingly frustrated.

On the half-hour Hitchin got a lucky break and an uncharacteristic error in front of goal led to an easy tap in for the forward, and to rub salt into the wounds minutes later (after a goalmouth melee) the ball found its way almost like a magnet at the feet of an eager Hitchin forward and he fired home through a crowded area. Although stunned the lads to their credit battled on and held firm at the back to see it out until half-time.

More words of encouragement followed at the interval, the lads had done nothing wrong and had competed all over the pitch, Matt and I were sure we could still get something out of this game.

The second half continued with the same frantic pace with Arlesey forcing a string of corners (and the real threat from Matt Bausts long throws) Tom Quambro was introduced at right back for ‘Rimmer’ (unfortunately someone had to come off this did not reflect his performance). Not before time the Blues hard work and patience was rewarded (the ref spotting a tug on Joe Follano’s shirt in the box) penalty!! Up-stepped an always confident Joe and he duly slotted home in the bottom corner with power and precision. This was just the tonic the lads needed and with (renewed encouragement from the line) they took a real firm hold on the game and showed great spirit to try and get back on level terms.

Although pressing forward, we were all aware of the threat from Hitchin’s counter attack but Luke Buck and Luke Jenkins, Carl Greenhow and Tom Quambro at the back held firm with terrific tackling and at times courageous blocking, keeper Phil Woolgar (making amends for his first half mishap) with an outstanding save, scooping the ball up and away when it seemed certain to go in (Gordon Banks from Pele header World Cup 1970). With time running out and the Hitchin manager increasingly agitated the Blues poured forward and got the break of a free kick just outside the area Matt Baust duly unleashed a blockbuster (everyone held the breath as it headed goal-wards) unfortunately for us it brought out a terrific save from the Hitchin keeper and we were denied again.

To the lad’s credit there was a huge sigh of relief from the visitors when the final whistle was blown, they had certainly been in a match. I just had to shake every players hand as they left the pitch I couldn’t ask for anymore and I was very proud of them all.

The whole team played extremely well, Matt Baust, Adam Coles (their usual gritty performances), Nick Webb and Andy Goddard (non-stop running), Tom Cookman and Joe Follano (battled upfront). Hopefully we can build on this performance for the remainder of the games this season.

Cheers Malc (hope to see you all on Wednesday).

B S Jets 3-2 Arlesey

More chopping and changing was needed for this away fixture, with bottom of the league Bishops Stortford Jets and with the late withdrawal of striker Tom Cookman MDM plans were in chaos again.

On the arrival at the pitch, there were a few raised eyebrows at its state, (could the horse of the year show have been held here?) also unusually small goals, cloggy pitch and a 1:10 slope left MDM scratching their heads.

All these hurdles seemed to contribute to a below par team performance and for the first time this season I can’t really find many positives to take from this match. Although the lads never gave up and tried exhaustively to at least get a point, but it just wasn’t going to be and Bishops Storford Jets in a way deserved to take all 3 points.

I don’t want to be too despondent and the lads shouldn’t be, two well taken goals from makeshift forwards Adam Coles and Andy Goddard and battling performances from (as usual) Matt Baust, Sam Bartram, captain Buckers and stand in goalie Joe Follano.

Hopefully this will carry on to our next important fixture Hitchin Town at home next week.

Cheer up lads every team has an off day (Middlesbrough v Chelsea!!)

Arlesey 2-3 Bassingbourn Youth

I really don’t want to be known as ‘wenger’ but ‘hear we go again’ and withdrawal of four key members from this game, (Tom Cookman on the slopes, Phil Woolgar away, Andy Goddard flu and Sam Woodcraft asleep). We were really down to the bear bones for this one and MDM new it was going to be a tough task to take all three points. After a minutes silence in the memory of the late Terry James (who we will all miss as he hardly missed any Arlesey Youth matches on the REC).

This was one of those morning kick-offs in the cold drizzly rain, not the most ideal conditions to take on one the least sporting teams in the league, but considering this with an unfamiliar line up the blues started off from where they left off last week knocking the ball around in style. Luke Jenkins playing upfront wide on the right (normally a center-half) linked up well with Lee Horwood and Nick Webb to cause the visitors numerous problems early on and were unlucky not to take an early lead. But just as the blues started to find some rhythm a misunderstanding between keeper and defender gifted a Bassingbourn forward a goal totally against the run of play. Undaunted the lads continued to push forward with their usual sexy style and as a result Adam Coles went close to scoring but somehow managed to spoon it over the bar (just needs a couple of goals reward for his hard work on the pitch).Yet again against the run of play another hoofed ball forward by Bassingbourn resulted in a 50-50 challenge between keeper and forward, keeper coming of worse and conceding a penalty, after a twice taken penalty the lads found themselves 2 down unable to convert any of their excellent approach play.

At half-time MDM tried to raise spirits and ignore the obvious intimidation and crude tackling from the visitors, the only way to beat them was to stick the ball in the back of the net, they had put in the effort and played some lovely football the only thing missing was goals. The blues started as brightly as the first half and midfield inspiration Matt Baust raised hopes of a comeback with a scorcher from outside the box low and into the bottom left corner. By now the blues had a firm grip on midfield with Sam Bartram ever eager to push forward and link up with Nick Webb and Adam Coles creating havoc in the Bassingbourn defence, again the lads were knocked back with a shoulder injury to Joe Follano in goal (with no subs) up stepped ‘captain Buckers’ to take over the gloves and Luke Jenkins was drafted into the defence with Joe moving upfront. However Buckers was caught cold in more ways then one a Bassingbourn speculative shot squirmed into the path of an oncoming forward who had the simple job of tapping in.

After this the lads could quite easily of caved in but they didn’t and showed the true spirit built up in this club and stormed forward yet again. A training ground routine down the left led to a crafty one-two between Sam and Nick who managed to beat the offside trap ending with Nick Webb side footing into the bottom left-hand corner. Although this turned out to be a consolation goal Bassingbourn had to really hang on in there to the end I am sure my thoughts will be echoed by all who witnessed this game we were more than a match and deserved at least a point, hopefully we will be a full strength when we play them away and get the points back.

I’d just like to thank all the players for their efforts and the way they played the game, you played football they way it should be played and for that you deserved the 3 points.

Cheers Malc

Arlesey 3-4 B S Swifts

After the frustrations of the previous week’s home game being called off (frozen pitch) against Bishops Stortford Jets the ‘blues’ had yet another stern test against one of the top four teams in the league.  Yet again selection problems for M.D.M, Carl Greenhow (flu), Buckers (girl friend duty) undeterred we opted for a diamond in midfield and put Sam Bartram alongside Luke Jenkins in middle back four.

With a mid-morning kick off and the sun unhindered by cloud it was the perfect setting for their game, Arlesey couldn’t have started better, first to the ball and passing the ball around with confidence.

Nick Webb latched onto a through ball from Tom Cookman; cutting inside the full back he curled the ball around the keeper and just inside the far post to take the lead. Moments later Phil Woolgar was called upon to pull off a brave save throwing himself at the feet of a BSS forward bursting into the area.

Then disaster struck, after having such a tight grip on the game and against the run of play, BSS gained a penalty to level the score.  But back came the ‘blues’ and after constant pressure and good work from Tom Cookman and Andy Goddard, Joe Follano fired home a half volley into the roof of the net in front of goal after confusion in the BSS defense. Unfortunately again almost immediately BSS drew level capitalizing on some sloppy blues defending.

Credit must be give to the lads as this didn’t knock their confidence and carried on playing some attractive football and they were rewarded for this just before half-time Tom Cookman hooked home a volley (almost shoulder height) giving the keeper no chance and giving the lads a boost just before half-time.

Half-time was upon before we knew it Duncan and I were lost for words, really the lads had put so much effort in and at times Arlesey looked as though they should be near the top of the league; more of the same was needed if we were to hold onto the three points.

Ten minutes into the second half Sam Woodcraft was replaced with Tom Quambro and then Lee Horwood followed to replace the ‘non-stop’ Joe Follano and later on Oleg Mucha replaced Micheal Rimmer.  Just when the ‘blues’ were getting into their stride again disaster number two struck and we were down to ten men.  Unfortunately after a string of breath taking saves from keeper Phil Woolgar, outstanding contribution from Sam Bartram and valiant defending we still managed to create chances with ten men!.  However Arlesey were unable to hold out and conceded two goals, yet again the lads we feel were very unlucky and should take great pride in the way they performed surely our luck has got to change ????.

Keep your heads up and see you all again Wednesday.

Hitchin Town 4-0 Arlesey

It was yet another case of deja vu for Matt and Malc (Dunc away on U 14 duty) unable to field a full strength team against the top team of the division (only lost once in 3 seasons!)  This was going to be a tall order to get any points at all.

Never-the-less with a re-shuffled pack and with lads playing out of position Arlesey started the more confident (maybe due to last weeks win at Baldock in the back of their minds) forcing several corners, all well taken by NIck Webb but unable to benefit.  For 20 mins the blues defense held firm, with captain Luke Buck and Carl Greenhow supported by Luke Jenkins forming a solid wall, frustrating the Hitchin forwards.

Unfortunately 2 lapses in concentration (mazy run and shot at near post and firm header from a corner) and the lads found themselves behind which undid all the good work and effort they had put in so far.  To make matters worse Luke Jenkins took a knock on a previous injury and had to come off, more tinkering needed and introduction of our only sub Lee Horwood up to half time.

The lads could quite easily have thrown in the towel as they just didn't get any breaks at all but fair dues they weren't too despondent and were prepared to roll up their sleeves for the second half.  As in the first half, the blues with a mixture of neat passing and ever willing running from Tom Cookman, Nick Webb and Andy Goddard  backed up in mid-field by Adam Coles and Matt Baust to their credit they tried to get back on level terms.

Unfortunately Hitchin went on to poach 2 more goals which was a real kick in the teeth to the team and the loyal supporters who turned out but yet again the lads can hold their heads high and must take full credit for contributing to an intriguing game. The score does not tell the full story as they did create good chances particularly efforts from Nick Webb and Matt Baust bringing the best out of the HItchin keeper.  A special mention to our keeper Phil Woolgar who although conceding 4 goals pulled off numerous brave and instinctive saves to keep us in with a shout.

Baldock Crusaders 0-2 Arlesey Town

Happy New Year to you all from the management MDM, and here we go again a New Year and a fresh start to the remainder of the season.

Away to Baldock was going to be a stern test for the lads, but we were all boosted by the return of Luke Jenkins and Sam Bartram (from injuries) back in the squad.

Fine drizzle and playing up the slope, the blues stuck to the task and were determined not to concede an early goal (as in previous games). Both teams started briskly maybe due to the chilly afternoon, although not creating any clear cut chances then on the half hour after some good blues pressure a huge long throw from Matt Baust, found its way to an unmarked Carl Greenhow in the penalty area (unfamiliar surroundings!) who on the turn swung his trusty right foot and guided the ball past the keeper inside the far post  GOAL!!!!! (well deserved for Mr 110%).  The goal seemed to install the early season confidence and the lads started to get a grip in the mid-field with surging runs from Sam Bartram (hitting the post with the keeper well beaten on one occasion) and wing men Nick Webb and Andy Goddard ever eager to take on the Baldock full backs.  Unfortunately half time was upon us, when we seemed to be in control and MDM a little disappointed to be only the one goal up, but with words of encouragement and ‘lets have more of the same’ we hoped they would push on.

The lads duly obliged and began to impose their neat passing game in all areas of the pitch with Matt Baust and Sam Bartram not frightened to take on player after player with ‘barn storming runs’ from mid field. After more pressure ensued from the blues down the slope and on 20 mins, from yet another Baust long throw and an untidy Baldock clearance Tom Cookman turned and half volleyed home goal number 2 and wrapped up the 3 points!

All 3 substitutes were introduced  (who were frozen stiff!) and to give them credit didn’t alter a good all round team performance, half a dozen  good chances were missed, the best was a Nick Webb chance that thundered against the post, but MDM mustn’t be greedy and we got the well deserved 3 points.  With Phil Woolgar back to his best a solid back four, ever eager mid field and Tom Cookman as Tom Cookman MDM couldn’t wish for a better performance, bring on Hitchin!

Many thanks to all the parents who braved the wintry conditions on the line their support was much appreciated.

Cheers Malc

Arlesey 1-9 Bedwell Park Rangers

Well what can you say about this performance???? Our heaviest defeat so far, we could look for excuses like losing midfield dynamo Adam Coles to flu or the sun being directly in our eyes, but to leak 2 early goals again was disappointing, only to give ourselves another mountain to climb. To make matters worse, due to a lack of discipline the lads went down to ten men, this all but ended any chance of an Arlesey comeback, and hard lessons must be learnt.

A bemused Dunc and Malc were at a loss to know what to do at half time as the game was beyond repair it was a case of rolling their sleeves up and soldiering on.   Effort could not be faulted especially from Matt Baust and Carl Greenhow who battled on to the bitter end, a handful of good chances were created but missed, before Luke Buck  made sure of a consolation goal with a close range header form a corner. But to really rub our noses in it Nick Webb had a penalty well saved near the end it just wasn’t to be our day!!

One lesson to be learned for our next game against Bassingbourn smelling salts to be taken prior to kick off!

Thank you to all the parents who turned up (and who helped with the goals) I hope like me haven’t lost faith in the lads hopefully this will be our one and only blip this season.

Bishops Stortford Swifts 5-2 Arlesey

Yet again Matt and Malc faced team selection problems (with the very late withdrawal of 2 players) at the early morning meet-up point, their tactics thrown into turmoil for the 3rd week running. Just what we didn’t need, facing current high-flyers swifts away at Bishops Stortford and the bare bones of a team.

M n M decided on a 4 5 1 formation rather than their usual 4 4 2 (with last years 10-0 drubbing in the back of their mind) a cautious approach was needed for the tough task ahead. Things were even tougher at 11.04 (kick-off 11 o’clock) kicking uphill on a chilly November morning the lads seemed to freeze, gifting the swifts 2 sloppy goals head start within the blink of an eye.

But after weathering the early storm the blues midfield began to see more of the ball and in patches played some of their attractive passing game which was a joy to watch, unfortunately just lacking some penetration. Although on 20 mins Michael Rimmer playing in an unaccustomed position (left-back) hooked over a harmless looking cross from the leftwing, level with the swifts penalty box, out came the keeper who under pressure from Nick Webb, squirmed the ball into the path of the marauding Adam Coles who slid the ball calmly into the net. But just when it seemed we had fought our way back into the game 2 more untidy swift goals in quick succession, and we found ourselves 4-1 down at half-time.

A head scratching Matt and Malc couldn’t quite believe the score line as the lads hadn’t played that badly, so a positive team talk was needed and a reminder that their passing game was beginning to create the odd chance and with the advantage of the slope to come, all was not lost for the blues.

Arlesey started to knock the ball around as though they were the team in front, and on the end of some intricate passing, Lee Horwood threaded a perfectly waited pass through from the midfield, for the ever willing Joe Follano to run onto and coolly slot home. With a mixture of graft, tough tackling and pleasing to watch passing the lads tried to get themselves back into this match, Matt Baust and Adam Coles giving everything for the cause but try as they might it wasn’t to be our day and swifts got the killer goal they needed (their best of the game) to settle the match. Had sub Oleg’s chance inside the box found the net who knows whether an Arlesey comeback was on the cards?? Although disappointed many pluses can be taken from this game, many players playing out of position showed the true spirit there is in the club (Michael Rimmer MOTM) and at times played some really good football against the high-flying swifts. Let’s take this onto the next game at home next week. See you all Wednesday        Malc

Arlesey 3-3 Wymondley Park

With all the early morning kick-off’s being postponed due to frozen pitches, an 11 o’clock pitch inspection was needed, even then there was 50-50 chance of this league match taking place, but come 12.30 the pitch had thawed enough and what a terrific game it turned out to be.

Yet again MDM had plenty of selection problems, with illness, injuries and late withdrawals this was a ‘big ask’ of the lads having to play with the bare eleven, (no subs) but the lads were sent on with Dunc’s usual words of enthusiasm ringing in there ears, this brought instant reward after 7 minutes with a Nick Webb corner being palmed away from the goal by a (Wymon P) defender ‘penalty’, up stepped Tom Cookman who struck cleanly his spot kick, but the keeper going down to his right hand post managed to keep the ball out. The game then seemed to take on a ‘cup-tie nature’ with both teams playing end to end football with bags of effort (Andy Goddard going close latching on to a lovely through ball).

Then midway through the half, a goalmouth scramble in the Wymon P box resulted in the ball landing at the feet of Lee Horwood, who turned and jabbed the ball past the diving keeper and into the net ‘Goal’. Unfortunately the blues couldn’t hold onto this lead with Wymon P scoring just before half-time on 39 mins.

At half-time yet more encouragement from MDM ‘come on lads we can do this’ and within 8 minutes of the restart Tom Cookman made up for his penalty miss, turning and striking a crisp shot past the keeper from just inside the box.

Without any (much needed fresh legged) subs to bring on, it was inevitable the Blues were going to tire, Wymon P making good use of 2 substitutions netted 2 quick goals, although pressed back and tiring chances were squandered, and just when we thought it wasn’t going to be our day, with minutes left Tom Cookman fired home a loose ball inside the area to level the match, PHEW!!! what a game.

Much credit should be given to all the lads for fighting back to get a point, all over the park there were many gritty performances starting with standing keeper Joe Follano, Karl Greenhow (2 world class goal line blocks) Oleg Mucha very creditable in his first full game start at left-back, Matt Baust and Adam Coles in central midfield both battled on right until the end, no-one should be ommited for praise as the whole team couldn’t have given anymore.

A big thank you to all the parents and supporters who turned up and kept urging the team on right until the end (cheers Dunc!!) hopefully you were all entertained + good luck to Wymondley Park who helped make it such a great game.

See you all Wednesday cheers,             Malc

Arlesey 5-2 Letchworth Orange

On a sunny chilly morning it was the lads first chance this season to grace the hallow turf of Arlesey Town Football Club with the visit of near neighbours Letchworth Orange, Division 1 league match.

Matt and Malc’s team talk must have fallen on deaf ears as 8 minutes in, a speculative shot-come-lob from outside the Arlesey area found its way into our net over Phil Woolgar at full stretch. But bouncing back 7 minutes later, The Blues were awarded a free-kick just outside the oranges goal area, up stepped Matt Baust to sweetly strike a thunderous shot leaving the bemused visitors keeper with no chance to draw the Blues level. From here on the lads settled into their accustomed passing game with Tom Cookman, Nick Webb, Lee Horwood and Matt Baust taking command in the midfield. Although the Blues began to dominate, we were very wary of the pacey Letchworth counter attack, Luke Buck and Karl Greenhow making many covering tackles. Then on 38 minutes Tom Cookman latched onto a super through ball (Nick Webb) calmly lobbing the stranded keeper to put the Blues in front. More attractive approach play followed, one 5 player passing move ending with a tremendous Matt Baust overhead kick, binging the best out of the orange keeper who scrambled down to his right hand post, such was the pace of the game in no time it was half-time and a chance to catch our breath. For the second half Lee Horwood was switched for Adam Coles and Karl Greenhow playing sweeper.

After a quiet first half Andy Goddard got more into the game down the right flank causing havoc in the Letchworth defence and unlucky not to score when having a right-foot shot blocked and a left-foot effort hitting the post. Talking of bad luck I must give a mention to Joe Follano, who on another day would have had at least a hat-trick, also hitting the post and finding the visitor’s keeper in good form.

Then against the run of play, Letchworth managed to claw a goal back but this only tightened Arlesey’s grip on the game with Matt Baust pulling out a top draw pile driver from the edge of the Letchworth box into the bottom corner of the goal. More pressure earned Arlesey numerous corners resulting in yet another powerfully headed goal from this time Tom Cookman. Shortly after this Michael Rimmer was brought on for Andy Goddard to help secure the 3 points and he did his job very well, in fact the blues pushed on and Nick Webb finishing off a mazy run in style to make it 5. This performance was much needed and we hope it will boost confidence for the up and coming fixtures. I am sure those who watched will applaud Letchworth orange for contributing towards a thoroughly exciting match and wish them well for the rest of the season, many thanks     Malc

BS Northolt 8-1 Arlesey

With the withdrawal of two key defenders Luke Jenkins and Carl Greenhow (through injury) it was a case of reshuffling the pack for 'MDM' and mulling the team selection over during the journey to Bishops Stortford.  On first viewing of the pitch it didnt seem too bad, but shortly after kickoff the rain got progressivly worse, more ideal to mud wrestling.  Unfortunately the home team adapted to the conditions very quickly and raced into a 2 goal lead, but credit to the lads they fought back, Joe Follano  latching onto a though ball and steering the ball low and inside the keepers right hand post.

With renewed confidence from the goal Tom Cookman and NIck Webb combined well to carve out chances, supported by Matt Baust, Adam Coles and Andy Goddard but to no avail.  The blues revival was short lived and at half time found themselves 4-1 down.

'MDM' were of the opinion we could turn it around, but then more bad luck Adam Coles couldnt go on for the second half and was replaced by Lee Horwood also Sam Bartram was struggling with a sore foot (later replaced by Oleg Mucha).

Yet more rain lashed down and the pitch resembled a paddy field, Northolt then used all their experience and share of luck to plunder 4 more goals which didnt reflect the way the lads played, there were some outstanding performances from Luke Buck, Tom Cookman and Tom Quambro who showed a 'never say die' attitude, hopefullly we can bounce back next week on a decent pitch at Arlesey Town Football Club against Letchworth Orange.

A big thank you to all the parents for their support who endured the rain and had to wash the kit!!!
