Oakley Rangers 0-1 Arlesey Town  County Cup

Despite missing influential skipper Coles through illness Arlesey won by a single goal in this County Cup tie on sunday.

 The blues had to work tremendously hard for there victory against current Chiltern league leaders Oakley Rangers. Oakley had most of the possession however Arlesey restricted them to long range efforts in the main which Swain in goal dealt with comfortably. In fact Swain pulled off a couple of spectacular saves to deny Rangers and his handling from crosses was faultless.

 The defence of Smith, Fye & Wells marshalled by Wheatley were equal to everything Rangers threw at them. Mardle went closest for the blues when a long range effort that went over the bar. 0-0 at half time.

 Second half was very much like the first with Oakley having the majority of the play. However after 50 minutes Arlesey scored what was to be the decisive goal. A good run and shot from Hood was only parried by the Rangers keeper and Mardle was on hand to tap the ball in. Just reward for Mardle who worked hard throughout the game. Oakley still gave Arlesey some scares. They hit the bar and their striker was through on goal and only stopped by a superb tackle from Fye. The blues led by Wheatley, who was awesome at centre half, held on to progress to the next round. Faulkner (who was booked !), Norton, Rummey, Thomson, Mardle and Hood played their part in the midfield not giving Oakley any time on the ball.

 All in all a satisfying performance with the whole team playing their part. Special mention to Ben Smith who on his own up front ran tirelessley putting the Rangers defenders under constant pressure.

Baldock Town Lancers 4-2 Arlesey Town

 Arlesey's season got off to a disappointing start with this defeat at local rivals Baldock Town
 

The blues were slow off the blocks and handed the initiative to Baldock, who opened the scoring early on when an attempted clearance was sliced into his own net by a  blues defender. Swain in the Arlesey goal was having a good game and made a couple of fine saves but could not prevent Baldock doubling their lead after 30 minutes.
 
Arlesey seemed to wake up and following a corner Ben Smith pulled a goal back in a goal mouth scramble.The blueswent close to equalising just before the break but at half time were 2-1 down.
 
The start of the second half Arlesey played much better and a long range header from Wheatley deflected off of a Baldock defender to equalise.  The blues went close on a couple of occasions and Smith put the ball norrowly wide. The game was now end to end and man of the match Swain had to pull off a couple of saves to keep the scores level. However it was Baldock who took the lead just after the hour mark. The game continued to flow end to end but Arlesey could not find the Baldock net and minutes from the end the Baldock centre forward raced clear and scored to make sure of the points.
