Potton v Arlesey Sky

Finally the last game of the season, although you would be forgiven if you thought it was the first. The sun was out the temperature was in the mid 20’s and the ground was very hard, training shoes being the choice and it’s only mid April. Well that’s another hose pipe ban this year for those of us who don’t live in Bedfordshire.

Anyway this was a game that had no bearing on Sky’s final league position, 4th place had been secured sometime ago and with Stotfold putting a winning streak together 3rd was no longer possible. This was all about pride, time for the lads to show what they can do with no pressure attached.

Sky’s as normal this season got off to their now familiar slow start and it wasn’t long before they were 1 down. Potton’s big forward was the key to the goal when he shot from out side the area. Liam got his hand to it but lucky for him that was all. Had he had got his body behind it he too would have ended in the back of the net; such was the power of the shot. Sky’s tried to get back into the game but was having little luck in front of goal. Then an uncharacteristic mistake by Jamie when he was slow to move out played a Potton play onside who slotted home to make it 2 nil at half time.

Sky’s tried to up their game in the second half but it was midway through the half before they came to life. Jamie making up for his earlier error volleyed a Potton clearance almost from the half way line that had the keeper saving with his legs. Sadly Reece G who had already closed the keeper down twice was flagged to be offside. That was a very strange decision being that he was coming out with his back to goal and made no attempt to play the ball. Well that was the springboard Sky’s needed, within minuets the ball was back in to Potton box. Again the keeper fumbled, Reece G pounced on the loose ball as the keeper tried to get his hands on it and poked it over the line. The Potton players were claiming the keeper had both hands on the ball and to be honest, so did I, but the ref allowed the goal to stand (some luck at last). For the next five minuets Potton were on the rack and were clearly panicking at the back, we played some wonderful one and two touch football (where’s that been all season?) but sadly for Sky’s time ran out. That last 10 to 15 minuets was properly the best I’ve seen them play all season.  Well done lads, be proud of your effort.

Bishop’s Stortford Rovers v  Arlesey Sky

With the temperature touching 26`c it was a case of making sure the players took on plenty of water, and which team would cope the best. As it turned out Sky’s were on fire scoring inside 10 seconds.  Daniel D took advantage of a goal keeping error when their goalkeeper was unable to hold onto a shot from Reece G.  0-1 Sky’s.

Sky’s came close to adding to the score with Daniel P and Jake P shooting over the bar.

But in the 10th minute Rovers equalised when Sky’s were caught napping following a throw-in 1-1.

Sky’s hit back when Reece G scored after Rovers goalkeeper was unable to hold onto the ball again 1-2 Sky’s

The third goal came after James H showed some dogged determination battling against several Rover players before coolly slotting the ball pass their goalkeeper 1-3 Sky’s.

Sky’s fourth goal once again came from a goalkeeping error with Reece G scoring from acute angle 1-4 Sky’s.

The second half saw Rovers trying hard to get into the game but realistically sky’s had put the game beyond them by then.

Sky’s fifth and final goal came from a Jordan G corner, but this time both Rovers goalkeeper and defence were at fault by allowing the ball to bounce which skidded off into the top corner 1-5 Sky’s.

Sky’s could and should have scored more goals, if it was not for some bad finishing but the lads should be pleased with there performance in such hot conditions.

Arlesey Sky v Sawbridgeworth

Sawbridgeworth kicked off against a confident looking Sky’s, following on from their win against Stotfold last week. Sky’s soon settled down playing some good one touch football, Jake P was playing like a man process, closing down, firm tackles, strong run down the right wing, and this was a side of Jakes play that has been missing for most of the season. As with to many of Sky’s previous games they conceded an early goal, no-one picked up a late run from a Sawbridgeworth player who put them 1-0 up.

This gave Sawbridgeworth the confidence to push on, but with Jamie H, Sean F along with Reece M and with some sound goalkeeping from Liam O, Sky’s were able to hold firm.

With Sky’s midfield combining well with their strikers Sky’s started to create several chances going close on a number of occasions, then with a clearance from Sean F that found Jake P on the right who ran on and sent in a fierce cross, this was meet by Adam D and using the pace of the ball guided it into the net (what a GOAL!!!!) 1-1

For the remaining first half Sky’s were easily in control, this was rewarded with a second goal after some good play again from Jake P who cut in from the right into the 18 yard area and found Adam D who scored his second from close range 2-1 Sky‘s.

Sky’s kicked off the second half as they finished the first in total control, Jordan G was now on and was combining well with Daniel D on the left, and both of them were giving Sawbridgeworth some real problems, when Daniel D ran through on goal and hit a fierce shot (which we all thought was going in) only for the goalkeeper to make an incredible one handed save down to his left, Jake P followed up the rebound only for the keeper to make a second save. For all of Sky’s dominance you felt they needed a third goal, even with Daniel P showing some delightful dribbling skills beating several Sawbridgeworth players, Sky’s midfield was pushing up to far and exposing their defence and with only a few minutes remaining and with Sean F still suffering from a dead leg was unable to close down a Sawbridgeworth sticker who ran down the right to score 2-2.

With the game finishing as a draw Sky’s can still be pleased with their performance.

 Arlesey Sky v Stotfold

This was a local derby game against Stotfold, a game that Sky’s needed to win if they wanted to keep the pressure on the top two teams.

With a very strong wind blowing across the pitch neither team having advantage Sky’s kicked off.

Credit must go to both teams for trying to play football in such difficult condition.

Stotfold had the first attempt on goal when one of their strikers struck the ball from at least 25 yards, which hit the crossbar and bounced down over the goal line (according to a Stotfold coach) but with the ref out of position he was unable to give it which didn’t go down to well with Stotfold.

With the wind having a big impacted on the game neither team was able to take control, then in the last 10 minutes Sky’s hit a purple patch, having several attempts on goal with shots from Adam, Jake, Dan D and both Reece’s all going just over the bar. It was surly only a matter of time that Sky’s would score, when Sean F hit along clearance from defence and with the aid of the wind sent it deep into Stotfold half.

Reece G ran on to it and with the strikers in support Reece crossed from the left where Adam shot low just inside the goalkeepers left post 1-0 to Sky’s.

This had Stotfold rattled which allowed Sky’s to push on even more. With the last attack of the first half Sky’s took advantage of some indecision in the Stotfold defence with the ball bouncing around and finally finding its way to Jake who shot from close range to put Sky’s 2-0 up.

Stotfold kicked-off the second half putting Sky’s under pressure and with in 5 minutes scored after Sky’s failed to clear their defence 2-1 to Sky’s.

Stotfold kept on pushing for the equalizer but with Sky’s holding firm signs of frustration were beginning to appear in Stotfolds play, with seemly every ref and linesman decision being questioned. Sky’s proved they weren’t going to be intimidated even when Sean F was deliberately kicked from behind when shielding the ball. (Which if the ref had seen the player would have been sent off)

Sky’s defended with discipline and composure and with Stotfold still unable to break through, and as the wind picked up even more with hail Sky’s started to counter attack with runs down the left from Dan D and Reece G bushing forward from the centre. Reece G efforts were rewarded with a run in on goal but as he rounded the keeper he was brought down (penalty!!!!) which didn’t go down well with the Stotfold coaching staff, but the truth is that their keeper did make contact with Reece G.

Reece M stepped up to take the penalty but as with other penalties in the past it was hit straight at the keeper. With time running out Sky’s held out for a well deserved win.

From keeper to defenders through midfield to strikers Sky’s should be proud in the way they conduced them self’s in a game that was turning more ugly and showed they weren’t going to be muscled off the ball.

 Arlesey Sky v Baldock

On a bright sunny morning Sky’s kicked off against Baldock, for much of the first half Sky’s enjoyed most of the possession competing in all areas. Dan Duncan was making strong runs down the left while Jake Phillips was making his presence felt down the right.

For all of Sky’s dominance their attack was lacking substance with only three attempts on goal, Danny Giammarco headed over the bar and both Jake Phillips and Reece Glasgow shooting over.

Sean and Jamie remained strong in defence while on the left Daniel was showing good ball control and the ability to take to ball forward until against the run of play Jamie without challenging, allowed a Baldock striker to ran in on goal, Liam Oatley came of his line but went down too soon which made it easy for the striker to score 0-1.

With the wind picking up and blowing into the Sky’s faces Baldock started the second half upping their pace. It was Sky’s who were now being pushed back. Sky’s were unable to get any distance on their clearances, partly due to the wind and also partly due to miss kicking while under pressure from Baldock.

Sky’s midfield was finding it hard to get into the game which was putting more pressure on their defence. Midway through the second half Sky’s started to gain control but as in the first half were unable to create any direct shoots on goal. And again it was against the run of play when Sky’s failed to challenge a throw in which enabled a Baldock striker to run in on goal and score shooting through Liam’s legs 0-2.

To Sky’s credit they didn’t let their heads drop and pushed on strongly, when Sean Winwood had a shot on goal which rebounded off the keeper and into the path of Dan Duncan who calmly put the ball into the back of the net 1-2.

Sky’s kept on pushing for a deserved equaliser and Jamie trying to make up for his earlier error whipped in a wicked free kick from the right. An excellent brave save from the Baldock keeper denied Jake Phillips a goal at the far post. But time finally ran out and as in previous meetings with Baldock, Sky’s lost a game in which there was very little difference between the two sides. The Baldock keeper ran off after the game and rumour has it that we may see him in the 2012 Olympics, if that is the case we wish him every success.

Man of the Match:  Daniel Duncan (work hard never stopped running)

Sawbridgeworth Blues 1-2 Arlesey

On a very muddy and wind swept pitch, with the centre looking more like a mud wrestling ring Sawbridgeworth kicked off just as the rain came down. They were soon on the attack and looking like they meant business, putting Sky’s under pressure and within 5 minutes scored 1-0.

This seamed to be the cue for a host of comedy of errors from keeper to strikers Sky’s didn’t have a clue. Miss-kicks, ball going through legs, no challenges and not running for the ball you name it Sky’s couldn’t do it. If it wasn’t for Sean Fell making some important timely tackles the score line could have been worse. The next 20 minutes were painful to watch, taking nothing away from Sawbridgeworth’s strikers who were looking useful Sky’s were making it easy for them. On the very few times that sky’s put some passes together Adam Day was brought down in the penalty area. Jamie Hyde stepped up to take the penalty; his shot was easily saved by the keeper which summed up Sky’s performance (no direction).

Kevin Phillips half time talk (which most of it is in pintable) was for more commitment in tackles and more desire to win the game and not to lay back and excepted defeat.

With Kevin’s words ringing in their ears Sky’s kick off the second half looking like a different team, Sawbridgeworth didn’t know what had hit them, Sky’s were all over them. From a corner kick Adam Day sent in a delightful cross from the left which curved onto the crossbar this had Sawbridgeworth rattled with signs of panic in their defence.

Dan Duncan started to cause problems for their defence with some strong powerful runs down the right wing, which was nearly reworded by Jordan Grindal who just headed over the bar.

Adam had another chance to show what he could do from corners when he curled from the left but this time it went straight in to the goal with the keeper and the defence looking on 1-1.

Credit has to go to Sawbridgeworth that they didn’t let their head’s drop and soon showed Sean and Jamie that they had to be on their toes, when they did managed to break through Liam Oatley was soon off his line and making some very important saves at the feet of Sawbridgeworth’s strikers even when they were leaving their foot in.

With the clock ticking down and the playing surface getting worse a draw was looking more likely when Sky’s had one more attack, Adam had a strike on goal which rebounded off the keeper and into the path of Dan Duncan who from close range fired the ball into the net 1-2 to Sky’s

Sawbridgeworth came back strongly but with grit and determination from all of the players Sky’s held out for the win.

Man of the Match: Liam Oatley (made a number of fine brave saves)

Team: Liam Oatley, Reece Maycock, Sean Fell (C), Adam Day, Jamie Hyde, Daniel Panico, James Hare, Sean Winwood, Danny Giammarco, Dan Duncan, Jake Phillips, Reece Glasgow, Jordan Grindal.

 Arlesey Sky 3-2 Royston Celtic

On arrival at the Arlesey Rec, you would have been forgiven if you had thought you had taken a wrong turn on the way; Pitch 1 was looking more like the blue lagoon than a surface fit for playing football on. We were lucky our pitch had no standing water on it. I must say that everyone involved in the under 16’s did an excellent job removing most of the water then getting their game underway.

Anyway, back to Sky’s, all the boys had put in a lot of hard work in training on Wednesday and even turned up Saturday morning for an extra hour to get themselves back on the winning streak after some below standard performances. However, this was always going to be a hard game as the pitch would have a big part to play.

The game kicked off and as usual we seemed half-asleep and Royston were first to break the deadlock, you could almost hear “here we go again” from the sidelines. Then James Hare suddenly remembered why he gets out bed on a Sunday morning and started to control the midfield. He cut out a through ball then slipped the ball out to Danny Duncan on the right, his pace took him to the byline, and his brilliant cross was finished off by Jake Phillips to level the score. Reece Glasgow also having a good game in midfield  and was rewarded with a goal just before half time. Sky’s for the first time after almost four and a half hours of football have the lead in a match.

The second half started as the first had finished Hare and Glasgow controlling the midfield. How nice to see our midfield working so well (where’s the midfield Gary Grindal when you want him). However, the game wasn’t won yet and Royston always looked like they could snatch a goal back so Oatley needed to be on his toes in goal. At the other end, their keeper twice denied Adam Day before he finally got the better of him with our third. Sky’s looked comfortable for a while until Royston got a second and suddenly doubt was there, would Sky’s throw in away? No was the answer, they stayed strong and defended well to secure three valuable points. This was far from their best, but a 100% better than previous games, well-done lads.

Man of the Match:   James Hare (by far his best game of the season)

Arlesey Sky 2-3 Bishop’s Stortford Athletic

This was the third time we have played Bishop’s Stortford Athletic this season and a win seemed the only result after scoring thirteen and conceding only one in the previous two games.

Having missed the last two games and reading the match reports it seemed if Sky’s played in the same manner BSA were in for a hiding. However, Sky’s soon found themselves two down halfway through the first period to a side that had dropped to foot of the table through the folding of Hatfield.

It was hard to understand what had gone wrong after working so hard against Potton in our last game. We did manage to pull one back just before half time when Jordan Grindal fired in from the edge of the box. Again as in previous weeks, we had a number of corners after putting there defence under pressure, but were unable to make them pay.

The boys trundled out for the start of the second half with Kevin Phillips’s instructions ringing in their ears. As the game continued we seemed to pick up the pace and started to move the ball about, albeit not very confidently. Grindal latched onto a ball following a mistake in their defence and as the keeper scurried back, calmly slotted pass him into the far corner.

Having clawed them back into the game, you would have thought they could then, finish the job, but Athletic never gave up and soon restored their lead when we failed to clear our lines.

We huffed and puffed trying to get back on level terms and we did have more chances then them, but we couldn’t find the magic needed in front of goal. To be honest Liam returning to goalkeeping duty following his injury had very little to do in the second half.

Bishop’s Stortford Athletic was worthy winners and worked hard as a team to earn the three points.

Man of the Match:   Reece Maycock.

Potton 2-1 Arlesey Sky

You would be mistaken in thinking that this was just another game the Sky’s had lost. In fact this was properly one of the best team performances the Sky’s have played in a long time.

From the kick off sky’s were on the attack playing some delightful football. Surprisingly it took the Sky’s until the 15th minute to score.

When Sean Winwood ran down the left wing and passed the ball onto Jordan Grindal who in turn found Jake Phillips on the right who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net 1-0 to the Sky’s.

With 80% of the first half being controlled by the Sky’s and with the last few minutes remaining Potton equalized after the Sky’s were unable to stop a run on the their left and failing to clear the cross Potton scored in off the post 1-1.

Second half Potton stared the livelier with a couple of runs in on goal. Sky’s soon got their composure together and started to play football as they did in the first half. Just as it seemed Sky’s would be the team to score next a Potton striker ran onto a long ball and scored to make it 2-1 to Potton.

Sky’s didn’t let their heads drop and constantly kept pushing for the equalizer, which we thought we got when several Sky’s players claimed the ball had crossed the goal line. The ref looked towards their linesman who didn’t give it. Several chances came and went and eventually the ref blow for full time.

It was a pleasure to watch the Sky’s play with such commitment and composure in a game they didn’t disserve to lose.

Jamie Hyde was given Man of the Match but as Kevin Philips said the whole team disserved it and I whole heartily agree.

Baldock 3-0  Arlesey

21/1/07

Arlesey 0-3 Potton Colts

With only one match and one training session since December 19th due to bad weather and Christmas, this was always going to be a tough challenge today. Potton were sitting second in the table one point above Sky’s with a game in hand, so a win was all-important.

Winter had suddenly crept up on us as a strong chilly wind blow across the Arlesey rec as the game got underway. Within minuets, Potton’s long ball wasn’t dealt with at the back and their striker strolled through to give Adam Day who was standing in for the injured Liam Oatley no chance. Potton were using the wind to their advantage and before we had reached the half way point of the first half they made it two nil from a corner.

Jamie Hyde, making up for his earlier mistake, placed the ball for a free kick out on the left some 30 yards or so from the Potton goal. He took one of the longest run-ups I’d ever see; surely, he’s not going to shoot? I thought. Well he did and the Potton keeper tipped it around his far post for a corner. Sometimes you need a little luck in football, and a slight touch from anyone in the box and it could have been 2-1, it could have almost been 2-2 when we rattled the crossbar just before the break.

The second half saw Sky’s battle very hard to get back into the game. Sean & Jamie worked extremely hard in the centre of defence along with the other two defenders Reece & Daniel to keep Potton at bay and you were hoping for that one goal that could turn the game around. Despite hard work, a goal wasn’t forthcoming. Potton wrapped up the three points, with a hotly disputed third goal. Although we did manage to get the ball in the net but it was finally disallowed for offside after the ref had a discussion with the lineo. Lady luck clearly wasn’t with us today. However, to be fair to Potton, I don’t think we deserved anything from the game, as we didn’t create enough clear-cut chances despite having a hatful of corners.

I hope that the weather is on our side and we can get some training in before our next game, a visit to league leaders Baldock! Although the weather forecast doesn’t look good.

Bishop's Stortford Ath 0-3 Arlesey

This years first game was away to BSCFC Ath at Bishop’s Stortford, and with the last competitive game the lads played back on 10th December 06, it was going to be interesting to see how they were going to perform.

With several players missing, which meant no subs and Liam injured Adam had to play in goal at sort notices. The game kicked off on a bright sunny but chilly afternoon, Sky’s were soon on the attack and with in 10 minutes with some good play between the strikers Danny Giammarco scored to put sky’s 1-0 up.

Several chances came and went and the score remaining the same it looked like Sky’s were never going to score until Jordan grabbed a goal just before half time after BSCFC Ath failed to clear from a corner 2-0 to Sky’s.

Half time team talk was about composure in front of goal, plenty of talk between players and keeping positions.

The second half came and went much like the first half,  with BSCFC Ath defending well with some strong tackles and Sky’s creating chances after chances and still not finding the back of the net, which you could put down to bad finishing, bad line calls (according to the Sky’s supporters) or just bad luck. With just a few minutes left Jake shot from the right just in side the 18 yard area and the ball slotted just in side the goalkeepers right post 3-0 to Sky’s.

When the ref blew for full time it was a relief to get 3 points from a game that Sky’s controlled and should have been in double figures which Sky’s no less deserved.

It would be wrong to single out anyone player as they all gave a sound performance, and hopefully this means we can put the Hatfield game behind us and look forward to a great finish to the season.

Well done lads keep it up!!

Arlesey Sky 4-6  Hatfield Town

10/12/06

To be honest I’m not sure what to say about this game other than we were poor, very poor, yes you could blame yet another windy day but sadly that would just be an excuse.

Last time we played Hatfield the last two lines in my report were: (I’m sure if Hatfield can field a full team on the return fixtures the boys could be in for a shock.) and shock it was!

Hatfield until today, have been the whipping boys of division 4 but today they lived up to their manager’s statement from are last meeting. He actually said that if he can get a full squad he‘d give any team a run for their money, how right he was.

Despite going in at half time two up, this wasn’t as easy as everyone was expecting. The rally cry went up as the boys were sent out to start the second half knowing that Hatfield would come at them now they the wind was behind them. Sky’s managed two more goals almost against the run of play, before Hatfield got their first and the second followed shortly after. A couple of saves, one a brilliant punch over the bar from a free kick just out side the box kept them at bay, but they did look dangerous on the break. We were to easily eased or muscled off the ball, and were showing very little desire to win. When Hatfield leveled the score, they looked even hungrier for their first ever win let alone their first point of the season.

Congratulations to Hatfield on their first win they thoroughly deserved it; we need to come back in 2007 hungrier than we were today if we are to have the slightest chance of getting promotion. The effort that is put into training now needs transferring onto the football pitch.

Have a good Christmas boys and come back with fire in your belly…..

Man of the Match:  Adam Day (hat trick boy, although we need to work on his celebration a bit)

Arlesey Sky 12-1 BSCFC Ath.

3/12/06

Strong wind has never good for playing football in as it often has a big affect on a game and today’s match was proof. With the wind, blowing diagonally across the pitch Sky’s used it to their advantage in the first half and for once turned the table on their opponents by playing the long ball allowing the front two to run on to it.

Jordan Grindal proved to be extremely dangerous in this situation and fired in seven goals before half time. Maybe we should adopt this style of play in future games, as that style of play often beats us. Danny Duncan used his speed getting a number of good balls into the middle from the right flank and managed to score two goals himself. Adam Day was also on hand to knock one in, giving us a commanding ten nil lead at half time.

During the half time team talk, we tried to bring the boys back down to earth, as it would have been far too easy to get carried away. In the second half we were against the wind and Athletic seemed more than capable of scoring goals, but for some brave goal keeping may have had two or three already. We also agreed to drop off and play a lot deeper than we normally would.

As the second half got under way our plan seemed to be working, Captain Sean Fell and Jamie Hyde the two central defenders worked well together in dealing with Athletics attack. To be honest Liam in goal had little to do and they never really looked like scoring until they were awarded a penalty.

We also found it a lot harder playing against the wind and were limited to only a handful of chances. Adam Day scored his second of the afternoon while Danny Duncan completed a hat trick. This would have properly secured him the Man of the match award on any other occasion but Jordan was deadly with his magnificent seven. Despite the emphatic score line this wasn’t one of Sky’s best performances as they can and have played better football as a unit. Still it’s three points that keeps us second in the league and something to be proud off, although we have played more games than most.

Man of the Match: Jordan Grindal (7-goal hero)

 Arlesey Sky 2-3 Baldock Town

Wow! What a game, this was Sky’s first visit to Arlesey Town’s Raj Villa Stadium for two seasons. Baldock were again the visitors as they were then, although this time there was slightly more at stake. This wasn’t an end of season friendly but a top of the table clash between two teams that are normally only separated by one goal.

Each time we have play down there, we have always had sunshine, and today was no exception, the sky was blue with an early frost, but any nerves the players might have had were soon forgotten, as the game got under way. Baldock took the lead midway through the half when they reacted quickest following a fine save by Oatley, having blocked a one on one situation he was disappointed to see the ball end up in the net as his defence ball watched. Five minuets later and Baldock were two up, again a sloppy goal to give away on Sky’s part; yet again, we failed to deal with the ball over the top. To there credit Sky’s had more than enough chances of their own to score but the Baldock keeper was doing well albeit many shots were straight at him, his handling was top class when he saved from a excellent free kick from Day out on the left as he whipped it into the near post.

Into the second half and Giammarco netted his first of the season to give Sky’s a glimmer of hope, that glimmer turned to joy as the main stand erupted (ok a little ott) when Grindal made it 2 -2. However, the joy was short lived as Baldock scored the best goal of the match re-storing their lead. Sky’s battled hard, but could not find that magic in front of goal as a number of chances passed them by. The match finished 2-3 to Baldock stretching their lead to 3 points at the top with two games in hand; credit must go to both teams for a thoroughly entertaining game of football. The Baldock manager and a number of his players sportingly admitted that for long periods of the game Sky’s were on top and had more of the chances, but in football, you must take them chances to win. It is still not too late for Sky’s and I am sure with more hard work we can push Baldock all the way for that title, you know the old saying in football, it’s sometimes better to have the points in the bag than games in hand! We will just have to wait an see as we have no game next week.

Man of the Match: Daniel Panico (A very confident display showed great ball control)

Team:  Liam Oatley, Reece Maycock, Sean Fell (C), Adam Day, Daniel Panico, Dominic Buck, James Hare, Sean Winwood, Danny Giammarco, Dan Duncan, Jake Phillips, Jamie Hyde and Jordan Grindal.

Royston Celtic 2-8  Arlesey Sky

Despite scoring 17 goals in three matches the boys still, need to talk more, and pass the ball around a lot quicker. Yes, we have improved over the last few weeks, but we still have a long way to go if we are to topple Baldock or Potton for the title.

The first half kicked off and within minutes, we were one nil up, but again the alarm bells were ringing as we failed to deal with a team whose main armory was the long ball over the top. Their keeper had an enormous kick assisted by a breeze that we found hard to deal with; luckily, for us their forwards appeared to have left their shooting boots at home.

A second goal settled the nerves somewhat and a third put many of the supporters at ease. However, Royston were not going to give up and still looked dangerous on the long ball counter attack, their hard work paid off for them as they pulled two back. Sky’s knocked in a forth before half time, but to be truthful it could have been 4 - 4 at the break, a missed open goal and a goal line clearance saved us.

Bang on 11, both teams impeccably held a two minuets silence before the restart,

The second half saw slightly less pressure from Royston and despite playing down a slight slope; their keepers kicking was not as penetrating as it was before the break. We did however play the better football in the second half knocking in another five goals before the final whistle, although not before another excellent goal line clearance.

Goals from: - Jordan Grindal (5) Adam Day (2) and James Hare wrapped up a pleasing mornings work, well done lads.

Next week we face Baldock properly the most important and maybe the strongest test so far and yes they have a very strong team this term, but it is not beyond our capability and I strongly believe that.

Man of the Match:  Jordan Grindal (5-goal hero)

Team:  Liam Oatley, Reece Maycock, Sean Fell, Adam Day, Daniel Panico       Dominic Buck, James Hare, Sean Winwood, Danny Giammarco, Dan Duncan         Jake Phillips, Jamie Hyde, Jordan Grindal.

Bishop's Stortford Rovers 0-1 Arlesey Sky

Our trip across to Bishop’s Stortford was another afternoon kick off for Sky’s and we all know what effect that can have.

The game kicked off to a lively start and the home team was soon on the attack. Throughout the entire half, they created chance after chance and but for some strong defensive work from Reece, Sean, Adam and Daniel they could have been five or six up by half time. Liam made a couple of good saves and their forwards were guilty of missing when it looked easier to score.

However, at the other end we seemed little better as our forwards were continually caught offside, albeit by a few dodgy flags by the linesman. We did have a few chances but not many and were unable to take them.

Are main threat was again as in previous games the long ball over the top also free kicks when we pushed up to slowly allowing them to get in behind. At half time, we discussed this and James Hare came up with a good point, that maybe we should drop off them a bit so that they didn’t have the space behind to run into. We put James plan into action and it worked, they certainly created less chances in the second half and it gave our defence more time on the ball. We had to wait until the 60th minute before Dominic Buck finally broke the deadlock with a well-taken goal. Seems he wants to retain the Player of the month trophy and become only the 2nd player to do so. Moving Adam Day up front and Jamie Hyde into defence seemed to have the desired effect Adam’s height was causing them problems and Jamie’s long defensive clearance had a direct result in the goal.

The best strike of the day and deserved a goal saw Jake Phillips crack one from the edge of the box that the keeper saved. However, Sean Fell still to get his first goal for Sky’s sent one just wide from way outside the box.

This was a good gutsy performance after a poor show last week and just goes to show what the boys can do, well done lads.

Man of the Match: Sean Fell (strong at the heart of defence)

Team:  Liam Oatley, Reece Maycock, Sean Fell (Captain), Adam Day, Daniel Panico       Dominic Buck, James Hare, Sean Winwood, Danny Giammarco, Dan Duncan         Jake Phillips, Jamie Hyde.

 Hatfield 2-8  Arlesey Sky

This is one of the hardest reports I’ve ever written and I would just like to say that my intention is not to belittle Hatfield Town in anyway shape or form.

Despite our 8-2 victory, this had to be one of the dreariest displays we have ever seen from Sky’s. Straight from the kick-off Hatfield’s star striker took on the whole of Sky’s right-hand side of the team finally ending up in the penalty area and to be honest everyone was so gob smacked no one can remember way he didn’t score. You would have thought that was a good wake up call for the whole team. Hatfield had just shown them what they were capable of, but no, we still allowed them two goals, which could easily have been five or six had they shown some composure in front of goal and had a little bit of luck when they hit the post.

When we finally took the lead through speedy Danny Duncan things looked good, but we then thought it would be easier to walk the ball into the net as we started to miss chance after chance. Hatfield started the match with only eight players and defended well; their keeper seemed to be stopping everything, yet despite having the player advantage we were unable to make it pay, a ninth turned up just before halftime.

Adam Day 2, Jordan Grindal 1, Sean Winwood 3, and Jake Phillips scored the other goals, we also managed to hit the post no fewer that 5 times. Yet despite all this, there was no fight, no passion and it looked like no desire to win. It even looked like they weren’t enjoying playing football in the slightest. The few weeks ago, Kempston hammered us in the County Cup 10-1 and on that day, we played with more commitment and more desire than we did today. Every single Hatfield player gave his manager a 150% effort; they never gave up, and were always encouraging each other. I know some will be saying a wins a win, but it’s how you win that counts, we’ve played ten times better in the past and lost. I’m sure if Hatfield can field a full team on the return fixtures the boys could be in for a shock.

Man of the Match: Sean Winwood (Took his goal scoring opportunities well & walked away with a hat trick)

Team:  Liam Oatley, Reece Maycock, Sean Fell, Adam Day, Daniel Panico       Dominic Buck, James Hare, Sean Winwood, Danny Giammarco, Dan Duncan         Jake Phillips, Jamie Hyde, Jordan Grindal.

Arlesey 4-0 Royston Celtic

This was a game that Sky’s needed to win, Royston were sitting just behind them in the league table so it was important that we secured the three points.

The game got off to fast start with the ball pinging around like a pinball machine. It seems that almost every team we’ve played so far rely mostly on the long ball over the top allowing fast forwards to run onto it. Royston were no different although they had a good player in midfield that also had the speed to get through. The Sky defence needed to be sharp, on their toes, Sean Fell marshaled them well, and on the occasions when the defence was beaten, Liam Oatley stood firm in the Sky goal again pulling off a number of excellent saves. Jordan Grindal finally broke the deadlock with a well-taken goal, we then had a number of chances to make it two but lacked composure in front of goal. At the other end Royston were suffering the same fate as they missed a number of chances. Midway through the half, Jamie Hyde had the ball in the net, but the referee had just blown for a penalty and said it was for a push on Adam Day. After some confusion on the pitch and between the coaches / Manager, Jamie put the ball on the spot and promptly put it into the field behind the goal. (What did I say about taking him to the England camp after the last one? This was straight out of the Becks, Lamps and Co school of English penalty takers.) Jake Phillips had an excellent left foot effort saved by the keeper just before half time. Much more of the same came in the second half although the Royston forwards had done a lot of running in the first half seemed to be tiring a bit. Dominic Buck who is having the best season ever for Sky’s settled our nerves when he struck with number two. Royston tried to get back into the game but again we defended well and Liam controlled his area. Speedy Dan Duncan scored number three & four surging forward from midfield, he also used his speed to break through an earn his team a penalty, this time it was Jordan’s turn to fail to convert as he hit the post (penalty practice at training I feel). Overall, it was another good performance by Sky’s, who, dare I say, continue to improve which they must if they are looking for promotion.

Man of the Match: Dan Duncan (scored two goals and his speed earned his team a penalty)

Team:  Liam Oatley, Reece Maycock, Sean Fell, Adam Day, Daniel Panico, Dominic Buck, Sean Winwood, Danny Giammarco, Dan Duncan, Jake Phillips,  Jamie Hyde, Jordan Grindal.

Kempston Colts 10-1 Arlesey

County Cup

Sky’s had their first crack at the County Cup this weekend and were given a lesson in how to play football.

On a nice sunny day we headed to Kempston for our first outing in the County Cup and within five minutes found ourselves 1-0 up when Jordan Grindal back from holiday beat the offside trap and hit a wicked shot up an over their keeper. At this point, we thought it was going to be a game we could win and get to our first ever second round tie. Then Kempston Colts put a slick couple of passes together; beat the on rushing keeper to slot into an empty net. Adam Day however had not given up and just as the ball was about to cross the line made a last ditch attempt to clear the ball with his long legs but sadly only helped it on its way into the roof of the net.

From then on KC dominated the game; Jamie Hyde had a long range shot which made their keeper work as he held onto it brilliantly. At halftime we were 6-1 down and to be honest never really looked like scoring. Cometh the hour (or 35 minutes in this case) cometh the man and Liam Oatley stood up to be counted despite picking the ball out of the net six times already he pulled off a number of excellent saves. KC thought it was a goal rush time and everybody wanted to score but Liam wasn’t having any of it and without him the score would easily have been doubled. However, if our forwards wasted opportunities as they did, I am sure they would go home with their ears ringing.

I hope that with a final score of 10-1 Sky’s can take a lot away from this game, if like KC you keep the ball on the ground, pass and move, win challenges, and when you need to, play the ball over the top you can win games. Sky’s have nothing to be ashamed of, they came up against a far better team, and lost, that is what cup football is all about. Good luck to Kempston Colts in the next round; we must now put the cup behind us and work hard for a good season in the league.

Man of the Match:  Liam Oatley (Kept the score down with a number fine saves)

Team:  Liam Oatley, Reece Maycock, Sean Fell, Adam Day, Daniel Panico       Dominic Buck, James Hare, Sean Winwood, Danny Giammarco, Jake Phillips,       Jamie Hyde, Jordan Grindal.

Arlesey 6-2 Bishop's Stortford

After a promising start to the season, the last two weeks have not seen the best from a Sky team that can do better. Tuesday night saw Matt putting the boy’s through a tough warm up with new helper Scott joining in and setting the pace. It was a very enjoyable session and everyone gained from it.

We had the normal rally cry at the start and the team seemed up for it, but how many times have I said that. Well this time they were and quickly started to defend well, they work hard in midfield and the passing was quick, slick and for once found there intended targets. To be honest I don’t think Bishop’s Stortford could believe it, some of the long cross-field passing was breath taking. All of a sudden, Sky’s had belief in their ability and it was a joy to watch. Five minuets into the game and Jamie Hyde opened his account almost nicking the ball of the toes of Dan Duncan. Five minuets later and Sky’s were two up when a shot from Jamie hit a defender sending the keeper the wrong way. Both Matt and I were directly inline with the flight of the ball from the time it left Jamie’s foot, it was always out of their keepers reach and going in the far corner, and we had no hesitation in awarding it to Jamie. Liam Oatley pulled off a top class save tipping the ball round the far post at full stretch denying Bishop’s Stortford any chance of getting back into the game. Then bang on halftime Dominic Buck got on the end of some great work between Daniel Panico and Jamie to score number three, capping the best start to a season Dominic as ever had.

Liam needed to be on his toes in the second half as the visitors were not about to give up without fight and was brave at the feet of their big striker on a number of occasions. Midway through the half, Jamie surged into the box pulled his right foot back and bang he was on the deck, the ref had no hesitation and pointed to the spot. Jamie, who today seemed full of confidence picked up the ball and put it on the spot. Kevin even asked if I was going to look as I held my breath, and watched as he struck it so hard the ball came back out of the goal (maybe we should take him to the England training camp) . Dan Duncan having an excellent game up front finally got on the score sheet himself, when his speed and pure determination got him into the box and he calmly slotted into the far corner. Jake Phillips contrary to his own believes was having a good game and wrapped up the scoring with number six, no more than he deserved. Both Bishop’s Stortford s goals came immediately after we scored our fourth and fifth, concentration is something we need to work on.

Man of the Match:  Jamie Hyde (his hard work earned him a hat trick)

Team:  Liam Oatley, Reece Maycock, Sean Fell, Adam Day, Daniel Panico       Dominic Buck, James Hare, Sean Winwood, Danny Giammarco, Dan Duncan         Jake Phillips, Jamie Hyde

Arlesey 0-2 Stotfold

On a lovely sunny September day, we had the 1st round of the League Cup and how ironic that we were drawn against local rivals Stotfold who we only played in the league last week and got a 5-1 drubbing. Neither team had ever ventured into the 2nd round before so at the end of this tie one team was heading for un-chartered waters.

Within four minuets, it looked like Stotfold were continuing where they left off as they took an early lead with a headed goal from a corner that we failed to deal with. The Sky Manager reshuffled the team from last week in an attempt to confuse our opponents and get the best out of the players. Daniel Panico moved back to his more favored position of left midfield, Reece Maycock moving up along side him on the right. Jamie Hyde & James Hare joined Adam Day & Sean Fell who was given the captains armband in defence while Dan Duncan after his excellent game last week was to play the holding role just in front of the back four. This allowed Danny Giammarco a bit of a free role in the centre of midfield, Jake Phillips & Jordan Grindal up front. The plan was working well as the team battled hard and kept the visitors searching hard for that all important second goal, Liam Oatley brave & strong in the Sky goal although he still needs a lot more communication between the back fore and himself.

Into the second half and try as we may we couldn’t find the back of the net, even Sean Winwood who was itching to get involved came on as sub and couldn’t find the opportunity to fire one in like last week. It just wasn’t happening in front of goal for us. Stotfold finally wrapped the tie up with a bit of a scrabbled goal with about ten minutes to go.  They almost made it three and it would have been the best goal I’ve ever seen at this level when their number 11 powerfully headed inches over from a corner late on. Good luck to Stotfold as they head into that un-chartered water of the second round.

Man of the Match:    Sean Fell (Excellent well-timed tackles, worked hard)

Team:  Liam Oatley, Reece Maycock, Sean Fell, Adam Day, Daniel Panico, James Hare, Sean Winwood, Danny Giammarco, Dan Duncan, Jake Phillips,  Jamie Hyde, Jordan Grindal.

Stotfold Juniors 5-1 Arlesey

Same old Sky’s good last week and really poor this. Every time we play Stotfold we seem to give in without any kind of sprit, it was as if half the team just couldn’t be bothered.

Straight from the kick off you just knew it was going to be one of those days; we were one down within minuets. I thought there was a suspicion of handball by a Stotfold player just prior to the ball crossing the line. Then it dawned on the Ref and everyone else that our keeper was in the same colour shirt as them so a quick change was required before the re-start.

Sean Winwood on his return to the team from a season with Letchworth got back into scoring ways with a trademark rocket, which gave the keeper no chance. That made it 2-1 and for the next ten minuets or so we had Stotfold almost camped in there own half but to be honest never really looked like getting level.

In the second half Stotfold stepped up a gear and got there 3rd, heads now started to drop quicker than the autumn leafs in the bright sunshine and it wasn’t long before Stotfold sealed the game and made a come back all but impossible for Sky’s. However, Dominic Buck sent a screamer just over the cross bar and maybe would have scored if we were playing at home in our size goals. We huffed & puffed but never really played like a team, mind you there were a few that broke into a sweat, but again, there were too many that didn’t.

We meet Stotfold in the cup next week and unless we want an early exit from that, the boys had better pull their fingers out, stand up, and be counted.

Man of the Match:  Dan Duncan (New to Sky’s this season very good game)

Team:  Liam Oatley, Reece Maycock, Sean Fell, Adam Day, Daniel Panico       Dominic Buck, Sean Winwood, Danny Giammarco, Dan Duncan, Jake Phillips (C), Jamie Hyde, Jordan Grindal.

Arlesey v   Sawbridgeworth Town Blues

The much-awaited season kicked off in weather more accustomed to August than September but at least the rain we had in August had turned the pitches back to football surfaces in stead of the parched dusty things we had at the end of July.

After two poor friendly performances where a number of players openly admitted they had not given 100%, Sky’s had something to prove and prove they did.
Straight from the kick off it was clear that the players were up for the game, tackles were being won even passes were finding there intended targets and there was movement off the ball, a far cry from the last two games.

Adam Day playing at the back just in front of the other three was told to get forward as often as he could. This soon paid off when he opened the scoring with a fiercely struck right foot shot into the far corner. This was just the started we needed; Liam Oatley was pulling off a number of fine saves in the Sky goal as Sawbo looked to get level. Sky’s were playing well and Jordan Grindal made the pressure pay when he netted number two. Jamie Hyde who had been given the captains armband after the departure of Charlie Marshall may have found the pressure getting to him, as he was guilty of the miss of the match. Jamie latched on to a long threw ball, he held off the defender brilliantly to find himself one on one with the keeper. As the keeper came out Jamie pulled the trigger and smacked the ball against the top of crossbar and into the trees. Maybe I was a little hard on him as I screamed my dissatisfaction. Mind you, I have seen many a professional miss in the same situation so kept playing the same way Jamie and the goals will come. (Was that a sorry! maybe? It’s never that easy being a coach’s son) Jordan later popped up again and made it 3-0 by half time, ensuring a good first half lead for Sky’s.

Sawbridgeworth were not about to roll over and soon pulled one back early into the second half and within 15 minuets had pulled it back to 3-2. Almost from the re-start, Jake Phillips found himself with a perfect goal scoring opportunity and made no mistake in hammering into the back of the net. This was a far better performance and a good start to the season but we still have to work hard and tighten up in midfield where Dominic Buck had an outstanding first half.
Man of the Match:  Dominic Buck (Best ever performance in a Sky shirt)

Team:  Liam Oatley, Reece Maycock, Sean Fell, Adam Day, Daniel Panico, Dominic Buck, James Hare, Sean Winwood, Danny Giammarco, Danny Duncan, Jake Phillips, Jamie Hyde (C), Jordan Grindal.
